I read with interest the article about this in Wired and had a look at your scribd slides. While a lot of it was over my head, your “trilemma” (politics/scalability/security) is similar to fundamental issues surrounding money in general.
Paper money scales. On the face of it, it’s insecure because it’s….just paper. Demanding both scalability and security in a monetary system involves enormous political obstacles.
Like DNS, our monetary system was designed more for scalability than anything else.
